“Only a crisis—actual or perceived—produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around.”
— Milton Friedman
But It Rhymes
A Century of Parallels
History presents us with a curious phenomenon: the first occurrence of a major systemic crisis unfolds as tragedy—raw, chaotic, destructive. People are blindsided. Institutions collapse under weight they were never designed to bear. The reset is involuntary and total.
The second occurrence, however, follows a different path. By then, observers have studied the first event. Policymakers believe they understand it. They build safeguards. They deploy new tools. They convince themselves they can manage the outcome differently.
This is where the pattern becomes farce—not because the participants are foolish, but because the very attempt to prevent the first outcome creates the conditions for a worse one. The confidence in control becomes the vulnerability.
Time does not change human behavior. The difference is only the year.
But there is a second layer: those who study the past don't just try to prevent the first crisis—they plan for the destruction of the current system. Understanding what failed before, they architect the next system as intentional design, not as organic causation. They believe they can engineer the transition.
This is the fatal assumption. They confuse the inevitability of systemic reset with the controllability of it. 🐍
